US President Donald Trump chose from three sanctions options against Russia presented to him by American officials, The Wall Street Journal (WSJ) learned .

The article notes that the most stringent option included restrictions on Russian industry and high-ranking officials. The White House chief opted for the middle option, which included the energy sector. There were also more lenient restrictions.

As the newspaper clarifies, at a meeting on Wednesday, Trump's choice was supported by State Department Secretary Marco Rubio and Pentagon Chief Pete Hegseth .

On Thursday, October 23, it was announced that the United States had imposed sanctions against major Russian oil companies and their subsidiaries. The European Union also approved sanctions, including those affecting the energy sector.

Russian President Vladimir Putin stated that the new sanctions will not significantly impact the country's economic well-being.
