Kazakhstan is planting forests on the dry bed of the Aral Sea.

Kazakhstan has engaged national and private companies to plant forests on the dry bed of the Aral Sea, the Forestry and Wildlife Committee of the Ministry of Ecology and Natural Resources of the Republic of Kazakhstan reported on January 9.

The Ministry signed an agreement with KATCO, a joint venture between France's Orano Mining SA and the national nuclear company Kazatomprom, as well as the akimats of the Kyzylorda and Turkestan regions.

Thanks to funding from KATCO, the project began in 2024 and will continue until 2025. To date, 522 tons of seeds have been collected, and 12,000 hectares were sown between December 16 and 30, 2024. An additional 108,000 hectares are planned for sown between January and February.

The project aims to restore the region's ecological balance, improve climate conditions, and support local communities. Planting trees helps prevent further desertification and restore life to the Aral Sea region.
