This year, Hungarian writer László Krasznahorkai was awarded the Nobel Prize in Literature. He was recognized "for his captivating and visionary work, which, amid apocalyptic horror, affirms the power of art."
This was reported on the official website of the Nobel Prize .
According to Suspilne, bookmakers listed László Krasnahorkai as a likely winner. Australian writer Gerald Murnane and Mexican writer Cristina Rivera Garcí were also among the likely contenders.
The Nobel Prize in Literature has been awarded since 1901, when prizes were also awarded in physics, chemistry, physiology, and medicine. According to Alfred Nobel's will, the award is given to the person who has created "the most outstanding work in the direction of idealism." Only works created within the year prior to the award are considered.
The winner is determined by the Nobel Committee of the Swedish Academy, which consists of four or five people – Swedish writers, poets, scientists and historians – who are elected for a term of three years.
